Tidings of New Stories

2 + 2 = 4

For those of you who follow my Facebook page, you’ll have seen that I’ve finished revisions (at last!) on book 1 of my new fantasy series, and have passed it on to my first round of beta readers. This is the first time I’ve used betas, so I’m naturally a bit nervous. It’s one thing to finish a book and hand it to your husband or sister or mom, knowing they will gush with praise. It’s quite another to hand it to someone and say, “Please tear it apart.”

*Gulp*

I originally planned for this book to be one of two. The first draft of the sequel has been written already, in fact, although it is awaiting much work! However, something has happened along the way. Rather inevitably, I suppose …

The characters … have come alive.

One or two of them are asking for their own stories. A couple others are wishing for more of their stories to be told. It’s all I can do to keep up with the ideas that are being flung at me, and in the process … two additional book outlines have taken shape. So it looks like this book duo has now become, officially, a series. A family of four books … two of which are only ideas thus far, yes, but rather strong and insistent ideas.

*Another gulp*

A bit scary. Quite challenging for someone who has never even considered writing a series. But what a delicious challenge! I think I’m willing to tackle it 🙂

BETA READERS

As I’ve said, the first round of my beta readers have copies of the book already. However, I will be announcing, at a future date, my need for a second round of 2-4 readers. Those who follow my newsletter will be the first to hear about this opportunity, and if the need is filled by them, I may not be announcing it again on my blog.

NEW FAIRY TALE

Before I launch into revisions for book 2 of the fantasy series, I am working on a novella of a fairy tale retelling that I plan on indie-publishing sometime soon (eek!). As it was written a couple of years ago, I’ve got a lot of work to do on it yet. I began revisions on it today, and I must say they are going swimmingly so far! I basically read through it and marked down all the “homework” I’ll need to do. Several hefty changes, but I’m excited to get started on them.

My wonderful newsletter followers will also be the first to hear about beta reading opportunities for this book, plus fun things like participation in the cover reveal, etc., when the time comes. (Ooh, helping design another cover … I’m definitely looking forward to that part!)

READING

On a rather random note, I just finished the amazing His Dark Assassin trilogy by Robin LaFevers, and am in a bit of withdrawal. None of the books I pick up seem to be appealing to me, but I’m ready to dive into something. Any great suggestions?!

  1. So awesome! I can’t wait!

Out of Darkness Rising by Gillian Bronte Adams is a fantastic read. However, it is short. Have you tried Orphan’s Song, the first book of her series? And I assume you’ve read Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier? If not, do so, along with the sequel. 🙂

    1. Wildwood Dancing is one of my favorite books of all time, and Marillier is one of my favorite authors!! Eee! Always glad to find someone who appreciates her like I do! 🙂 I recently read Orphan’s Song – very cool! But I’ve yet to read Out of Darkness Rising, although I’d love to. Thanks for the recommendations!

  2. So awesome!!! Congrats on finishing your book! I can’t wait to read it, and the rest of the series. I believe I’m following your newsletter, but I’d better go double-check. 😉 I’d love to help beta-read it!!! The novella sounds amazing, as well, and I will definitely pick it up when you publish. 😀
I recently self-published a novella that you might like. Paralyzed Dreams. I’m obviously biased. 😛 I’d also suggest Venture Untamed (which was awesome) and Lisa Bergren’s River Of Time series, which is AMAZING. 😀

  3. So exciting!! I can’t wait to read your new fantasy series, Ashlee!!

As for a new book to read. Hmmm. Storm Siren by Mary Weber? That one’s pretty intriguing. I just finished Cinderella’s Dress by Shonna Slayton; it’s a very fun, short(er) book set during World War 2. Or Of the Persecuted by Angie Brashear… amazing book! 🙂

    Blessings!

    1. I read Storm Siren recently as well – it was definitely interesting, wasn’t it?! Cinderella’s Dress sounds like a fun premise, and I’ve been wanting to read Of the Persecuted for a while now … I’ll have to see if my local library has either of those. Thanks!!

  4. The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson is a very intense read to commit to. And its going to be ten books long…only two books are out, both over 1,000 pages. But they are INCREDIBLE. And difficult. And mind-blowing. And it is one of the best epic fantasies ever written.

And have you kept up with the Tales of Goldstone Wood? Because they just keep getting better and better. Golden Daughter was AWESOME.

    1. I have yet to read anything by Brandon Sanderson, but I’ll admit to you … I actually checked out one of his Stormlight books from the library a while back, and I was so daunted by the sheer size of it, I didn’t read it! So now you know: I’m a coward. Haha 😉 No, really it was because, at the time, I was feeling rather overwhelmed and wasn’t sure I had the energy to begin on something so epic. But I’ve heard so many great things about his books I think it’s going to have to happen one of these days!!

I’ve read the first two Goldestone Wood books, and am honestly not sure why I haven’t read more! I am constantly hearing wonderful things about them – none of which I really NEED to hear to prove to me that Anne Elisabeth is an awesome author 🙂 So yeah, great ideas, Hannah!! What’s the 3rd Goldstone book? Maybe that’s my next read.

  5. Congratulations on finishing your draft! I’m excited to hear more about this story and about the tales that’ve sprung from it!
As for recommendations, I heartily second Hannah’s recommendation of The Stormlight Archives– or just about anything by Brandon Sanderson, really. Everything he writes (except maybe the Alcatraz series) is insanely amazing. Seraphina, by Rachel Hartman, is also amazing if you like dragons and intrigue and mysteries.

    1. Thanks, Sarah!! And oooh! Seraphina! I’ve seen that one here and there and keep telling myself, “I’m reading that soon!!” … but then I forget (I forget a lot of things these days!!). Thanks for reminding me, and it’s so good to know it’s a good one!

  6. Have you read RJ Larsons Books of the Infinite????? There are three in that particular series.. Prophet, Judge, King. and… they bless me even MONTHS after reading them… Highly recommended. and Mortis by Hannah Cobb. and Monster by Mirriam Neal (not a horror book as the title might make one think) Pauline Creeden’s Chronicles of Raven is a steampunk story. 🙂

    1. I haven’t read any of those, actually. I’ve got RJ Larson’s first book (Prophet?), and would love to read it sometime soon. It’s in eBook, though, and eBooks don’t always make it high on my list since I strongly prefer hardback 😉 Thanks for all the great recommendations! I’ll have to add those to my list!
